Design & Inspiration

The New Balance 1906L debuted during Junya Watanabe MAN's Fall/Winter 2024 show at Paris Fashion Week in January 2024, sparking rapid normalization of sneaker-loafer hybrids in fashion. Created by Charlotte Lee (Design Manager of EMEA Energy and Speed at New Balance), the 1906L represents an indulgent and cheeky juxtaposition between formal dressing and sneaker culture. Lee spotted early buzz around loafers in the luxury market during the early 2020s and recognized the perfect opportunity to merge New Balance's preppy connotations with classic loafer aesthetics.

The 1906L grafts a traditional penny loafer upper onto the high-performance sole unit of the 1906R runner, retaining the technical DNA including TPU heel cage, ACTEVA LITE cushioned midsole, and ABZORB SBS heel inserts. The model launched at retail September 19, 2024 in "Metallic Silver" colorway ($160) before expanding into Junya Watanabe collaboration versions (October 18, 2024, $252) and various inline colorways. The 1906L quickly sold out initial releases and inspired competing brands including Nike, HOKA, and Puma to create their own sneaker-loafer hybrids throughout 2025. The trend resuscitated the broader loafer industry with sales up 33% year-over-year for men and 28% for women in Fall 2025.

This "Neon" colorway continues the hybrid's playful momentum following the "Firecracker" edition. Off-white upper base with tonal loafer strap maintains the series' DNA while layering high-contrast multicolor accents. Lime green (neon) highlights the tongue and collar area.
