Premium all-leather construction celebrates Made in England craftsmanship. The New Balance 991 "Chocolate Plum" delivers rich tonal depth through layered leather execution, marking a refined return for the 2001 classic amidst the 991v2's recent reign.
Design & Inspiration
The New Balance 991 originally debuted in 2001 as the first 99X series model of the 21st century, positioned between the 990v2 (1998) and 992 (2006). The silhouette introduced significant innovations: the first in the lineup to incorporate ABZORB cushioning in both heel and forefoot, featuring visible ABZORB pods that became a defining aesthetic element. Handcrafted at New Balance's legendary Flimby factory in Cumbria, UK since 1982, the "Made in England" badge represents decades of expertise and commitment to quality craftsmanship.
On paper, the original 991 shouldn't be receiving much spotlight in 2026—the 991v2, introduced in late 2023 with full-length FuelCell cushioning and a sleeker profile, has dominated through strong inline colorways and collaborations. However, the original 991 from 2001 is primed for a comeback. Following a two-style collection by Aimé Leon Dore founder and New Balance Made in USA creative head Teddy Santis comes this fresh "Chocolate Plum/Caramel Cafe" inline colorway, showcasing the model's enduring appeal.
This all-leather build departs from the typical suede and mesh construction. Rich Chocolate Plum dominates the overlays and paneling, while warm Caramel Cafe tones accent the midfoot and collar areas. The premium leather execution emphasizes texture and tonal depth rather than contrast blocking. The streamlined toe box—a signature 991 element—maintains the sleeker, more athletic shape that distinguished it from the 990v2. The visible ABZORB pods in Chocolate Plum tones integrate seamlessly into the color story. The "Made in England" label sits discreetly under the tongue, a humble nod to Flimby craftsmanship appreciated by those in the know.
Comfort & Performance
ABZORB cushioning in both heel and forefoot provides exceptional shock absorption and impact protection, reducing fatigue during long wear. The dual-foam midsole construction (visible on some colorways as cream rear/white front sections) delivers responsive comfort. N-durance rubber compound in the outsole ensures maximum durability by reducing wear. The wedge-shaped midsole references early running sneaker design while incorporating organic styling New Balance became known for. The fit runs slightly wider and shorter than standard sneakers—a Made in UK characteristic that benefits most wearers, as the average foot width is "D" width while most sneakers are made in narrower "B" width.
