Design & Inspiration

Originally debuting as the Style 36 in 1977, the Old Skool became the first Vans shoe to feature the iconic Sidestripe and was officially renamed in the early '90s before achieving Vans Classic status. Dutch artist and designer Parra (Pieter Janssen) has built a legendary career through high-profile sneaker collaborations spanning two decades, from his grail-level Nike Air Max 1 "Amsterdam" in 2005 to recent partnerships with ASICS, Nike SB, and Vans. Following their popular 2024 Half Cab collaboration for Go Skate Day, Parra reunites with Vans' OTW division to reimagine the Old Skool 36 while maintaining the aesthetic consistency that defines his most successful partnerships.

The "Midnight & Carmine" colorway delivers Parra's trademark wavy suede paneling and high-contrast palette. Rich ocean blue suede covers the toe box and lace stay, anchoring the design with depth. Parra's frequently-used pink shade sweeps across the ankle and upper side panels in his signature overlapping wave pattern, creating dynamic visual movement. The lower lateral side panels continue in blue while the medial walls shift to dark navy, adding dimensional complexity. An orange/carmine suede heel counter provides fiery contrast. The traditional Vans Sidestripe is entirely replaced by layered, undulating suede motifs that create a striking 3D sculptural effect—a bold departure that transforms the iconic branding into artistic expression. Custom-drawn OTW logos appear on the tongue, while dual Parra x Vans branding marks the insoles. The shoebox features trippy linework reminiscent of Parra's Nike SB collaborations, adding collectible appeal beyond the shoes themselves.
