The Ten & Virgil Abloh Legacy
Virgil Abloh partnered with Nike October 2016 launching "The Ten" collection 2017—ten deconstructed Nike icons divided into "REVEALING" and "GHOSTING" themes. Air Jordan 1 led "REVEALING" pack designed to look hand-cut, open-source, reconstructed. Abloh used X-ACTO knife to puncture sole discovering Air unit inspiring "AIR" midsole text. Chicago colorway debuted first May 2017 Met Gala earning Footwear News 2017 Shoe of the Year. Europe-exclusive all-white "Euro" version released 2018. Powder blue UNC colorway followed June 2018. Partnership redefined sneaker collaborations blurring prototype and product lines. Virgil Abloh Archive founded by Shannon Abloh preserves late designer's creative legacy—collection over 20,000 objects spanning Virgil's practice. "Alaska" marks first global V.A.A. product release continuing historic Nike partnership under new banner. Virgil Abloh (1980-2021) inspired to become designer as teenager in Rockford Illinois sketching shoes mailing ideas to Nike.
