PUMA x F1 Partnership Welcomes A$AP Rocky as Creative Director

  • Posted By : Hatim
In a groundbreaking move, sports giant PUMA has officially announced its collaboration with music artist, designer, and creative powerhouse, A$AP Rocky. This long-term creative partnership is set to redefine the intersection of sport, streetwear, and fashion.

A Fusion of Motorsport and Streetwear

Rooted deeply in the motorsport business, A$AP Rocky will don the hat of the Creative Director, focusing on the synergy between the adrenaline-packed world of F1 and the pulsating rhythms of streetwear. The partnership will see Rocky channeling his creative energies into PUMA's new alliance with F1. He will be at the helm of designing bespoke capsules that will set the tone for PUMA's design directions in the seasons to come.

Beyond the Racetrack

Earlier in the year, PUMA had unveiled its long-term association with F1, positioning itself as the exclusive licensee and trackside retailer for all F1 races. With a rich legacy in motorsport, PUMA is now poised to delve into the influence of streetwear and fashion beyond the confines of the racetrack. A$AP Rocky, with his unparalleled fashion acumen and cultural insights, is set to bring a fresh perspective to F1's burgeoning audience.

Rocky's Vision for PUMA x F1

The collaboration will see a phased influence from Rocky. Initially, he will adopt an "in the lab" approach, kickstarting the creative exploration for the category. Throughout the remainder of the year, Rocky will shape the visual and video content for PUMA. His debut campaign, where he plays dual roles as the creative director and producer, delves into the car culture in America and its ripple effects on streetwear and fashion.
Later in the year, fans can anticipate an exclusive PUMA x F1 collection drop, offering a glimpse into the capsule collections slated for 2024, centered around high-visibility F1 races. Come 2024, Rocky will shift his creative gaze to several Grand Prix races, starting with Miami. These collections, conceptualized and designed in collaboration with PUMA and F1 teams, will be accompanied by curated activations at each race.
By 2025, Rocky envisions a deeper immersion into the holistic product creative designs for the entire PUMA x F1 range, spanning from racewear to fanwear to high-fashion. The overarching aim is to bridge the gap between streetwear, fashion, and motorsport.

Voices from the Collaboration

A$AP Rocky expressed his excitement, stating, "Working with brands as iconic as PUMA, and as innovative as F1, has been truly inspiring." Maria Valdes, PUMA’s Chief Product Officer, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing Rocky's talent and vision. Oliver Boden, Head of Licensing and Gaming at F1, highlighted Rocky's alignment with F1's vision and looked forward to the collaboration.

Thoughts on this collab?

The PUMA x F1 partnership, bolstered by A$AP Rocky's creative direction, promises to be a game-changer in the world of sport and fashion. But let's be honest, this project has to be big, the before/after must shock the whole industry.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting collaboration.

Review and on feet look of the Final Fantasy XIV x Puma RS-X Black

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the famous Final Fantasy XIV, Puma has collaborated with the hit RPG on a collection of sneakers and apparel.
Highly anticipated by the video game community, the Collection was released on March 25th in Europe and the USA (a few weeks earlier in Asia).
Concerning this drop, we can regret its regional character from a European point of view since we only had the right to 3 pairs in Europe where the USA had 4 and the Japanese 8.
The same goes for the clothing pieces.

Directly inspired by the game and the duality of light and darkness, the Collection presents 2 opposite palettes :
a first one imprinting black and purple tones while the bright side chooses a white and a blue gradient.
After the recent POKÉMON x Puma RS-X Pikachu, the Puma RS-X has once again been chosen to be part of the collaboration pieces.
The Final Fantasy XIV x Puma RS-X 'Black' comes in a special white box.

The co-branding is present on the tongue and the insole of the shoe.
It uses a creature from the game called the 'Fat Cat' Minion, as Minions are pets that showcase a player's character and can sometimes symbolize the achievements they have made.

The pair is constructed with a black mesh base complemented by purple tone overlays, a lining and a lighter reinforcement at the back.
Specific details of this collaboration, a dark crystal is attached to the lace and the tongue tab at the front is made of a fully iridescent material.
A small tab at the heel with the inscription 'Pull me' and round laces complete the design for easy on and off.
Touches of gray balance the contrast and a unique marbled sole is designed under the pair.

A collaboration that is very much in theme but doesn't take too many risks here. Less details than the Pokemon collaboration.
We could have expected more graphics like on the Maco SL. It will still delight the fans of the game.
The Final Fantasy XIV x Puma RS-X size is small, we recommend you to take a half US size above your usual size.
(Example: I am in general a Size 9US/27CM. I had to take a 9.5US/27.5CM for these).
Beware the Puma Size is different from other brands of Sneakers.

It is currently sold out in the USA and there are only a few sizes left in Europe. Check the full availability via our release page.

POKÉMON x Puma RS-X Pikachu review & on feet look

The POKÉMON x Puma RS-X 'Pikachu' is part of the Pokemon x Puma collection which consists of different Footwear and apparel highlighting Pokemon characters including SquirtleCharmander, Gengar, Bulbasaur and Pikachu.
Paying homage to the most iconic character of the Pokemon world with this release, Puma applied Pikachu characteristics to the RS-X silhouette.

Not seen that much recently, the Puma RS-X is a very comfortable puma lifestyle sneaker which falls into the chunky dad shoe category.
This time, the base layer of the shoe is constructed out of a pale yellow ripstop nylon.
On top of that at the front, a mix of synthetic leather & darker yellow suede overlays are surrounding the toe cap and the eyelets of the shoe.
On the side, the classic Puma stripe is done in a lenticular finish featuring a lightning bolt holographic design reminding the special power of Pikachu.

At the back of the shoe, we have a semi-translucent TPU heel clip in the middle structuring and adding support.
Underneath this, we have again a black colored lightning bolt graphic expressing Pikachu abilities.

The tongue is covered in that same pale yellow ripstop nylon and we have a synthetic leather tag on the top featuring the Puma branding and Pikachu's face.
Hanging off the shoe, the pair includes a Pikachu hang tag as well.

On the back of the tongue we have this rectangular tag with a Pokeball graphic along with the numbers 25, 26 and 172 which represents the different iterations of Pikachu through its evolutions.
The black insoles features the silhouettes of these 3 steps.

The white chunky foam midsole is contrasting with a speckled yellow hit in the
middle along with the black with yellow speckle paint on the heel.

About sizing, they run small to me. I recommend to go at least half size up on these.
Pay attention as the Puma sizing is different from other Brand. For example 9US is 42EUR while for Nike 9US is 42.5EUR.
Make sure to go half size up on the US or Japanese sizing.

When it comes to quality, I would not say the materials are premium on this pair, plus it includes a lot of synthetic ones (nylons, Puma stripe).
However, the execution & achievement of the shoe is great. My pair don't have any defects or glue stains at all.

I personally think that this collaboration (as well as the whole collection) is really cool especially if you are a fan of the Pokemon characters.
With a price tag of 120€, Puma is really keeping this sneaker affordable on the current market.

At the moment the Men version was only released on Puma stores worldwide & sold out in a few hours.
You can still grab a pair of the secondary market
