The Air Jordan 4 "Black Cat" prowls back for its third retail release, honoring Michael Jordan's panther-like nickname with Nike Air branding for the first time and an improved shape that mirrors the 1989 original.
Design & Inspiration
The "Black Cat" nickname originated from Michael Jordan's childhood and evolved to represent his stealthy, predatory movements on the basketball court—agility and precision that inspired Tinker Hatfield when designing Jordan's signature line, most notably the Air Jordan 13 with its panther paw outsole. First released in 2006 as the Air Jordan 4's first-ever all-black colorway, the "Black Cat" initially had an unusual trajectory: pairs sat on shelves and hit discount bins, even coming with a poster of "The Shot" over Craig Ehlo. The all-black nubuck upper, tonal mesh netting, black midsole with glossy overlay, and Light Graphite Jumpman on the tongue created a monochromatic masterpiece ahead of its time.
Release History & Evolution
2006 Original: Retail $117, underappreciated at launch, many pairs discounted
2020 Retro: Instant sellout following The Last Dance documentary boom, resale climbed to $1,000+, featured grey inner lining (vs. original all-black), Ortholite insole upgrade, Jumpman heel branding. The quantities were quite limited though.
2025 Version: First-ever Nike Air heel branding (replacing Jumpman), improved shape matching 1989 original mold (following 2023 Nike SB x AJ4 Pine Green redesign), refined nubuck quality, updated cushioning from AJ4 SB tooling, full family sizing
The transformation from discount bin to $1,000 grail status reflects the Air Jordan 4's cultural resurgence and TikTok-driven demand throughout the early 2020s.
Comfort & Performance
Built on the updated Air Jordan 4 mold introduced with the 2023 SB collaboration, the 2025 "Black Cat" features improved proportions with a slightly higher ankle collar and sleeker toe box. Visible Air Max unit in the heel and encapsulated forefoot unit provide responsive cushioning, while the black nubuck upper delivers premium texture. The molded plastic wings and mesh panels maintain the original's structural integrity and breathability.
